I have recently been hearing alot of neagive feedback about actually being execpted in a job b/c of my online degree.

I do the hiring for our department, and I can honestly say that I would give much less consideration to someone with an on-line degree than I would to someone who attended classes on campus, participated in discussions in class, was active in extra-curricular activities, and completed internships and other job-training programs not available to on-line students…

While on-line degrees are certainly convenient, they pale in comparison to the experience gained by actually attending classes on a college campus…

However, I do think each school is different. Some unaccredited law schools have BLS that are conveyed upon the students who eventually get J.D.s.

My brother has worked at UoP for 2 years now. The class structue is unique. all of your classes are kinda melted into one program of study. He seems to like it.
Problem is that most of the credits are difficult to transfer if you do switch schools later

It is prety dang expensive compared to state universities.

Walden University seems to be one of those schools. The classes are completely canned and ridiculously easy. Students were taking 4+ classes a semester until the school received bad press and stopped the practice. Now their students just sit through classes, doing the minimum amount of work (mostly taken from previous online postings), and get a degree in half the time of a regular school.

Sure it’s not like the "send your check and receive a degree in 30 days" schools, but it’s close.

Has anyone else gone there and what did you think?

They are accredited, but that means very little to the employment world. I received my Masters from Walden in 2005 and it has been treated with nothing but mockery since. Capella University, Phoenix University, and Walden University are not looked up favorably by employers. Given the choice, I would not go back to Walden and wish that I had gone to a better school to begin with. Sure the classes were pretty easy and it did fit my schedule, but the end degree just doesn’t carry the same weight.

I think I did see a ranking for online schools in US News & World Report a couple years ago – and it wasn’t pretty. Walden ranked better than most of the others, but still well below the national average in just about everything. I can’t image that they’ll let themselves be ranked again for a very long time. Distance education can offer advanced degrees in Bachelor, Master, and PhDs, but this school just hasn’t got it right yet.

As for whether or not they are a diploma mill, I’m not sure. I really didn’t have to work that hard for my degree. The classes are all canned and the assignments are simple. Only one or two of the classes gave me a hard time, and that is because I was so use to coasting my way through. So they aren’t the typical degree mill that just sends you a piece of paper, but it is fairly close.

FYI: I was not the greatest student in my undergrad or in high school. I don’t think that I ever got over a 3.0 GPA and I never even took my GRE. AND Walden was still easy. Oh well, I’m considering going to a traditional bricks and mortal school for my PhD.

Thanks I did not know that. I think I will look into online and campus classes that go hand in hand. I just can not devote to a all campus schedule.

Lots do — but none that are respected universities.

Many schools are starting to offer some classes online — but not whole programs. They are usually restricted to introductory classes.

The University of Phoenix fellow bragged & bragged when he got his degree online.

The gentleman that actually went to the classes at Southern CT State argues his degree is more meaningful since he sat through live classes and experienced the full college scope by hearing ideas of others in a classroom environment, did an internship to obtain his degree, live group projects, etc.

I don’t know what to think. Do you think an online degree from the University of Phoenix is really equivalent to that of one from a college where you actually attend the classes in person?

Do you think a job recruiter would take the ‘sit down’ degree more serious than a degree obtained on line?

As a short answer, the sit-down degree is better and will be looked upon by recruiters as better. The University of Phoenix degree isn’t useless because I personally know people who have changed careers and gotten better jobs because of their degree. However, if your two co-workers both applied for a job and I had to decide between the two, if all else were equal, I would choose the Southern CT State degree over University of Phoenix everytime.

If you want to stop the UoP graduate from bragging, ask him how much he paid for his degree. If he got employer tuition assistance, ask him how much came out of his pocket and how much the employer paid. If he took the entire degree at UoP (all 120 credit hours), I bet the total cost was upwards of $40,000. He could have gotten a regionally accredited degree online from a state university in Nebraska(125 semester credit hours) for less than $20,000.
