Who thinks Walden University is a Diploma Mill?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

In the old days it was easy to spot a diploma mill. All you had to do was to find out if they were accredited or not. Now every business organization that wants to make a buck is starting a "University". They get a bunch of professors from other schools, come up with a bs curriculum, and sell it to students who had poor grades in high school or undergrad. They don’t ask for a SAT or GRE.

Walden University seems to be one of those schools. The classes are completely canned and ridiculously easy. Students were taking 4+ classes a semester until the school received bad press and stopped the practice. Now their students just sit through classes, doing the minimum amount of work (mostly taken from previous online postings), and get a degree in half the time of a regular school.

Sure it’s not like the "send your check and receive a degree in 30 days" schools, but it’s close.

Has anyone else gone there and what did you think?

They are accredited, but that means very little to the employment world. I received my Masters from Walden in 2005 and it has been treated with nothing but mockery since. Capella University, Phoenix University, and Walden University are not looked up favorably by employers. Given the choice, I would not go back to Walden and wish that I had gone to a better school to begin with. Sure the classes were pretty easy and it did fit my schedule, but the end degree just doesn’t carry the same weight.

I think I did see a ranking for online schools in US News & World Report a couple years ago – and it wasn’t pretty. Walden ranked better than most of the others, but still well below the national average in just about everything. I can’t image that they’ll let themselves be ranked again for a very long time. Distance education can offer advanced degrees in Bachelor, Master, and PhDs, but this school just hasn’t got it right yet.

As for whether or not they are a diploma mill, I’m not sure. I really didn’t have to work that hard for my degree. The classes are all canned and the assignments are simple. Only one or two of the classes gave me a hard time, and that is because I was so use to coasting my way through. So they aren’t the typical degree mill that just sends you a piece of paper, but it is fairly close.

FYI: I was not the greatest student in my undergrad or in high school. I don’t think that I ever got over a 3.0 GPA and I never even took my GRE. AND Walden was still easy. Oh well, I’m considering going to a traditional bricks and mortal school for my PhD.

Ph.D. in Public Health -Walden University???

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

I am in California and am thinking about getting a Ph.D. in public health (epidemiology) from Walden. They are an online school. They are accreddited, but would this degree hold up in California? Does anyone have input?

Walden is a For Profit corporation. While it is accredited, it is not respected. Getting a PhD from Walden probably won’t help you get an academic job and won’t help you a lot with jobs in industry.

Get a PhD at a school that is respected.

What is the BEST online college for a B.A. or a B.S. in Psychology? Please Help!?

***i’ve searched kaplan university, baker online college, walden university to name a few. and i saw the degree reviews from thise schools and they all mostly got panned. and now im just very unsure which online sch to choose from that is not a scam and is affordable. Thx.

There are tons of online programs. I personally attended traditional and online-only schools, and I have taught for various online schools and traditional schools over the last five years. All are accredited and solid programs. Schools tend to vary in price, so we could say online schools are more expensive, but that is relative. Of course they are more expensive than a community college, but less expensive than Harvard. The price range varies.

The key is to find a program that is fully accredited. Is it worth it? YES. My career has boomed since my MBA at nearly 5 years ago. I am close to finishing my PhD through distance education, and I am at the job that I want. I know I wouldn’t be here without the education. If you are looking at work in the U.S., then you need a school that is accredited and recognized by the Dept of Ed. I can give more info on that later.

You should market yourself and not the degree or university. There are many traditional universities offering degrees that can be earned through online methods. Distance Learning Alliance has a list of these traditional online schools. Look at that if you are truly concerned with the name of the school. Good luck on your search!

Does anyone have any information on how good online PhD universities are? Walden, Argosy, or Capella?

Are these actually accredited degrees once obtained?

I don’t know what kind of a Ph.D. you are thinking of getting, but I can tell you that in the academic world, if you are thinking of becoming a professor, no self-respecting university would ever hire a Ph.D. from one of these, or frankly, any other online program. There is absolutely no equivalence to an in-person Ph.D. program. The faculty are generally completely unqualified to teach at that level. I would urge you to run before putting any money down on any such program.

Degrees, by the way, are not accredited. It is the organizations themselves which are accredited. Unfortunately, these days, everyone claims to be accredited, because there are all kinds of phony accrediting organizations out there. I looked on all three websites, and while I couldn’t find any evidence that Argosy was accredited, the other two are accredited by the North Central Association. Interestingly, that is a legitimate accrediting organization, but what they are accrediting is that the school lives up to its mission and spends its money accordingly. Accreditation of the whole university does not mean that they do a good job of teaching a specific subject matter. In business, for example, you would need to see accreditation by someone like AACSB (or in a pinch ACBSP) to say that anyone had any oversight of program quality, in addition to the accreditation for the whole university. They don’t have that. No purely distance-learning school does. U of P has applied to start the accreditation process, but as I understand it, has not been approved.

Any comments on Walden University?

I want to persue Masters degree online, and today on TV I saw commerical from the Walden University. Wanted to know if anyone knows about it more or is enrolled. Please share any expericence you might have on this university.

I’ve taken some MBA courses from Walden and they’re not bad. Because they are an on-line/web based University, it’s really up to you to keep up with the coursework. The Walden courses are actually a collection of other university courses. Their university partners are all reputable institutions like Berkeley, UVA, UNebraska, OSU and many more. Also, you get to "meet" other career-students with similar goals so you get to trade a lot of interesting stories.

If you are the type of person who is disciplined and diligent, I would definitely do it. However, if you are unsure about finishing the degree, I would think twice about it (unless your employer is paying for the tuition)

Anyone have any experience with Walden University?

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Walden is about to start on online BS of Psychology degree that I’m thinking about transfering to. Currently go to Regis University and they’re not offering the classes I need online – and I *need* online classes! (Stay at home mom, no money for day care, etc.) So I’m wondering if anyone has had any experience with them and what they’re like.

(I asked this last night too, but it got buried somewhere and not answered…)

I haven’t had experience, but a lady I teach with has been taking classes through Walden and loves it! She said they are awesome to work with.

Joining Walden University. I want to know is their MS. degree in Psychology acepted here in New York?

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Joining Walden University. I want to know is their MS. degree in Psychology acepted here in New York? I want to make sure I’m not wasting money for nothing. I am going into clinical psyc and had no time to go to school so I wanted to take a shot at the online schools. Please let me know about this. Thanks in advance for all info provided.

I thought of doing this, too, until I called the APA (Americal Psychological Association): they are the national accredition board for psychologists (both clinical and experimental) in the United States. Walden University is not an APA-accredited program, therefore, you will not be eligible for state licensure. Your best bet is to find an APA-accredited program. You can contact the APA or search the web for those types of programs. In New York, SUNY has an excellent psychology program.

P.S. A Psy.D. or Ph.D. is required to become a clinical psychologist and this is a very competitive and demanding field. The tassle is worth the hassle!

Best wishes.

is a degree from walden university reputable in academia/business world?

Sunday, May 3rd, 2009

I know this is a for-profit univ and also is based entirely online. I am wondering will having this school on my cv/resume give me less credibility in my career than someone who attended a traditional univ? What are your thoughts on these type of degrees?

My wife, and many other teachers, are currently working on their Masters in Education from Walden University.

We know a couple of teachers who have received a masters from the university and haven’t had a problem with it.
