I don’t know of any. I’m going to school now to get an associates in nursing. There is a lot of clinical time involved at the hospital and a few hours of lab time a week.

Once you get your associates you can get your bachelors online. I have found a few programs like Penn State.

Its so intense all the material to learn… Maybe with an online degree, you can actually do clinicals onsite with a cna or med assist position… I’m sure they’re not idiots. There is such a nursing shortage right now…. Need your thoughts… especially from someone in the medical field.

I for 1, got my RN degree from excesior, and i absolutely love it! i feel they prepared me well, and i’m lovong being an RN.

That being said, you have to be either a paramedic or an LPN already to get into excelsiors RN program, and there is a clinical. It is test out, and it’s 3 days long.

Don’t EVER let anyone tell you that a RN that got their schooling online is a bad nurse. Excelsior is accredited and they make sure you know your stuff before you get out.

Has anyone ever been sucessful in finding a job using an online degree? If so what degree did you earn and from what college did you attend? Thanks, I am stay at home mom looking to move forward in my education I just don’t know what feild I would like to get into. I saw a few nursing degrees that are online, but i know i’m not going to get any job with a online nursing degree. Most companies what more hands on in that feild.

You have to be careful when choosing the college that you get an online degree from. Some of them are jokes; they aren’t regionally accredited, and don’t hire people with advanced degrees to teach the classes.

There are some excellent universities that offer a variety of degrees. I’m not sure where you live, of course, but I’m familiar with a couple of them and can recommend them.

Utah State University has on-line associate’s, bachelor’s and advanced degrees. Some of them are available entirely online. They offer degrees in the social sciences, education, business, and computer science.

http://distance.usu.edu/

Emporium State University in Kansas also has a distance ed program that offers bachelor and advanced degrees. The bachelor degrees require that a student has already completed 60 credits of college.

http://lifelong.emporia.edu/

Utah Valley State College has a program that offers an associate’s degree entirely online. It is an excellent program. They also offer live help online, and an online library.

http://www.uvsc.edu/disted/

John and Mariah Bear offer a book full of information about distance education. It is available in bookstores and libraries. They also have a website. On that site you may want to check out "100 Schools" on the list in the center of their homepage.

Like a good majority of the world, I’m contemplating going back for a nursing degree. I’m 40 with 2 small children (5 and 3) and would like to be flexible. Are online nursing courses frowned upon? There are obviously some that require onsite training but for those that don’t, is that the best approach? Are there any reputable online programs that are accredited?

To be honest I don’t even know how they even let those go. It seems ridiculous to me, I wouldn’t want a nurse who obtained her degree online.

for the ones that don’t require on site training, how do you get your clinical hours in. I guess I just don’t understand.

I think you should go to a conventional nursing program, no it isn’t flexible, yes it is an extremely rigid schedule but you can do it.

My kids are 5 and 2 and I am. It’s hard and I have no clue about this fall because my schedule is about to get very extreme. But I will work it out and I’m sure you can as well. Get your pre reqs done online, because unless you have been to college already you will have a lot. and then apply for a program. you might not really see your kids for a few years but you will be doing something for their future.

EDIT: At my school for my nursing classes, I can not pick when I go, although they are during the day right now. My adviser told me that for next fall that I can clear out my entire thursday and friday because I will have no way of knowing when my clinicals will be schedule, plus I have to go to the hospital on wednesday to pull my patients files and research everything about every drug they are on and every condition they have and write 10 page care plans. Then on Monday and Wednesday I also have classes, I am not sure when else, I think my Tuesdays are free in the fall.

I took everything I could early and don’t get a break until Christmas except 1 week in August. But my school gets down to it. It is a satellite school (branch off of a larger university) so I suppose they have short man’s syndrome. lol.

Oh yeah definitely get your Bachelor’s at the minimum, I know you are thinking I’m forty but it’s not like it’s that much longer.

The reason I ask is that my husband and I are currently stationed overseas with the military and we won’t return until 2010 and I have always wanted to be a Nurse

Visit the base education office where you are assigned and ask them all about Excelsior College and the nursing program there. They will know a bit about Excelsior and can help you with testing requirements.
