I have posted 2 weeks ago a question about ASHFORD UNIVERSITY online. Some of you have said that a degree with them is pretty much worthless. I have many hours from different colleges, and at Ashford I will need only 33 h. of upper division to finish my major. Somehow I feel like that college is a spam, money mone money….. I know it cost a lot, but I have only 11 classes left…. this is the easiest way to get a B.A as fast as I can. I am tired to go to school at night, becaus eI have to stay home with my kids during the day..
PLEASE give me more info about this college or anyother ONLINE COLLEGE

It is a regionally accredited university with an actual campus, and that is good news. It has been around since 1918, so it is not a recent online only college startup.

It is owned by a for profit company. That is not so good. The general concern one has about for profit universities is that they may sacrifice educational quality for profits.

US News and World Report has a profile on them. It lists them as being less selective, and ranks them in the fourth tier among colleges in their category.

If you are getting your degree online, you are on the right track in going for colleges with a campus, and with regional accreditation. But if you can find one that is better recognized it may serve you well in the end, even it if takes a little longer to complete your degree.

is there any schools accredited and apa authorized for paralegal associates degree online? I checked on the apa site and did not find anything. I thought maybe the site was not updated with current schools

I’m not sure but please note that I’d asked my friend’s mom who worked in human resources at a law firm about paralegal, and she said that they generally need a bachelor’s degree in ‘something’ (and most likely training from aba approved program) to possibly gain employment. I’d spoken with a lawyer many years ago, and he said that he can merely hire a law student as an intern for less money and not have to provide job benefits, just fyi

If still wanting training, please forgo those private $$ schools and look into the county vo-tech school or community college (perhaps non-credit course) as long as it’s accredited.

(online), I have applied to University of Memphis to complete a Bachelor’s degree in international business or marketing. I am having second thoughts about my path now. Should I continue with a Bachelor’s in Information Technology or a more specific business fields? Shall I attend traditional campus or continue online? I have done it before, it’s great, but time consuming. For business traditional campus seems like a great idea. But if I continue with IT, then what better place to get the degree than online, where you are forced to deal with more software and the internet? The IT field is growing so fast and there are so many high paying jobs and new fields, but business has a proven success record with hard work. Hard work will, of course, always be necessary. But what field and end to a means is the most noteworthy and reasonable? Give me your opinion.

Congrats on finishing your AA. IT is a great field to be in, you can always pick up an MBA down the road when you have some business experience.

I wouldn’t recommend UOP for the degree, even tho it is regionally accredited and will allow you to be licensed. A Memphis IT degree is best case. Online degrees are great for people who don’t have access to local school, the military, or working parents, but if you have access to Memphis, definitely go there.

If you are going on line, DeVry is the best option.

To correct Kalos, you do NOT want to go to Grantham, it is only nationally accredited, and not a good one at that.

Regardless of delivery method (on ground, online, hybrid), a higher ed institution in the US can have 3 institutional accreditation statuses.

1. Regionally accredited – the highest and most useful.
2. Nationally accredited – real, but not as recognized or useful. Yes it is less than regional accreditation, which isn’t intuitive.
3. Unaccredited

Just to correct Dave in Seoul, Kaplan University is regionally accredited, you can verify it on the CHEA or DOE websites. Alot of people find accreditation confusing.

Hi all,

At the ripe old age of 43, I have decided to go back to school and try to get my Assoc. degree in hopes of entering the Adult Probation Officer field.

First… has anyone gotten a degree from an online University and are they reputable?

Secondly, I have been contacted by AIU, CTU and a couple of others. I have also looked at Phoenix? (they ring the phone off of the wall daily), which drives me insane!

Can anyone make any recommendations here?

I need to do this online due to work and family issues, but I want to make sure I choose the school that is going to give me the best advantage.

Any help/direction would be greatly appreciated!

Call down to your local PD or Sheriff’s office (non-emergency number) and ask for the training officer. Tell the TO what you’re thinking of and get his opinion.

He will know where people in that location have gotten their education. It’s very possible that more than a few were online degrees.

The academic field of criminal justice and CJ administration is wide open right now with new programs being added all the time.

A few regionally accredited that have an AA/AS/AAS in Criminal Justice are Liberty, Iowa Central, Rasmussen, Fisher, Stonecliffe (Colorado Tech), Keiser U. Post has an AS online in Legal Studies.

Any of the social sciences should be acceptable for that profession as well though I’d suspect they’d rather see applicants with a BA/BS.

Don’t stop your search for a good school at the heavily advertised for-profits (UoP, Kaplan, etc…) but remember, they are regionally accredited too.

Nationally accredited (such as ACICS or DETC) schools are legit and valid but will cause you a transfer problem later if you want to further your studies at a regionally accredited school.

Before you make your final decision – be certain the school has the level of accreditation you need. Ask here or on http://www.degreeinfo.com or http://www.degreediscussion.com

I should hope not -unless you still needed to do a practical term before fully qualifying. I would hate to be injected or examined by someone who only knew in theory what they were doing.
